After a great year of training, our sponsored team, SUTRI, from the local University, took part in the biggest race of their calendar season. With great results all round with many members of the club completing the first ever triathlon.
The event took place at St Mary’s School in Calne, where the inter-university championships have taken place for many years. The club set off in the early hours of Sunday morning this bank holiday weekend, to take part in another fun filled day.
The sprint triathlon consisted of a 750m-pool swim, challenging 25km hilly bike route and a 5k around the school grounds. With different goals from each member of the club participating, everyone managed to have a thoroughly enjoyable day (with no punctures of DNFs!)
Extremely impressive performances came from Southampton athletes Tom Hibberd (pictured) and Lowenna Hawkey (pictured) who completed the race in 1:15:24 and 1:25:46 respectively. Other noticeable competition came between Peter Fuller (ex-president) and newly elected Mitchell Campbell with just 4 seconds separating them over the race.
Many PBs were smashed throughout the day with special mention to Amy Kearton who just 6 weeks before was swimming 750m in 20 mins, only then to knock 5 minutes off her swim time on race day! There were smiles and unparalleled support between club members throughout the day’s proceedings, owing to the advantages of having multiple waves throughout the day (due to over 650 students competing!)
Overall the day was a resounding success with more female athletes taking part from the club than ever before, showing the increased participation from the female sporting world and with the top 50 men in the race all coming within 2 minutes of each other.
Be sure to look out for the SUTRI Swim Hats down at Eastleigh lakeside and feel free to ask them about their race day experiences! We look forward to seeing how the team will move forward and look forward to supporting them through the Open Water Season.
